Fall is officially here! Aside from enjoying the beautiful weather and fall colors, NHH-UT has been hard at work withe events, traveling, and preparing for our upcoming Nature and Health Symposium!

Nature and Health Symposium

Join us for the Second Annual Nature and Health Symposium on Tuesday, October 22nd, from 9 AM to 3 PM at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center. The event will feature keynote speaker, Nikki Smith, pilot grant presentations, and a guided walk along the Jordan River Trail. Don't miss this opportunity for food, networking, and learning!

Nature and Human Health Utah visits Southern Utah University!

Nature and Human Health Utah just returned from Cedar City where we had the opportunity to meet with faculty, students, and community stakeholders from Southern Utah. This trip was inspiring, introspective, and gave us a lot to think about as we plan for our future and the ways in which we can support Southern Utah and regions beyond the Salt Lake Valley. We are thrilled to announce Nikki Smith as the keynote speaker for our second annual Nature and Health Symposium! Nikki is a Salt Lake City-based climber, artist, writer, and photographer with over 150 first ascents under her belt. Beyond her extensive experience in climbing and guidebook authorship, Nikki is a passionate advocate for a more inclusive and diverse outdoor community, especially for the LGBTQIA+ community.

October Research Brief: Effectiveness of Nature-Based Walking Interventions in Improving Mental Health in Adults: A Systematic Review.

The Native Research Methods group is hosting a networking breakfast on October 24 from 8-10:30 AM for staff, faculty, and graduate students from the main and medical campuses. This event will provide information about campus programs supporting ethical research with Native nations and offer opportunities to connect with others involved in this work. This is the group's only event for the fall semester, with plans for a symposium in the spring.

Community Updates

HEAL Utah has been selected as a 2024 AARP Community Challenge Grantee, chosen from over 3,300 applications as one of just 343 recipients across the U.S., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. This grant will support efforts to create healthier, more livable communities in Salt Lake City and beyond, focusing on ensuring that residents aged 50+ have access to reliable transportation, public spaces, and safe environments.

Applications for the Executive Director position are open until November 4th. The organization seeks a candidate who aligns with values of joy, collaboration, inclusion, and stewardship to execute its strategic plan. Meanwhile, Georgina will support the team with programming and uphold strategic goals during the transition.

October Community Events

Here are three events we’re most excited for this October:

BOOtanical Days
Join us from October 17-30 for BOOtanical Days! This enchanting event offers fun for the whole family, with activities ranging from storytelling at the Water Pavilion Lawn to dancing to spooky Halloween favorites in the Courtyard. Enjoy a variety of themed experiences as you explore the garden, including a Hunt for the Mummy Seed Escape Room Challenge and visits to whimsical areas like the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and the Queen of Hearts’ Palace.

Nature in the City: Birding 101
On October 5, join Tracy Aviary educators at Conservation Garden Park for an engaging family-oriented workshop on the basics of birdwatching. Learn to identify various bird species in your own backyard while enjoying the beautiful surroundings. All materials will be provided, making it easy for families to explore the garden and discover the wonders of local wildlife together.

Work & Learn: Bulb Planting
On October 19, get your hands dirty and help plant bulbs for spring color at the Conservation Garden Park! This hands-on workshop will provide expert instruction on yard care practices that you can use in your own garden. Dress for the outdoors and bring gloves as you work alongside experienced gardeners to beautify the landscape while learning valuable skills.
